Georgia General Assembly, secretary of state

ATLANTA -- In separate resolutions Tuesday, both houses of the Georgia General Assembly commended APS Superintendent Dr. Beverly L. Hall for her dedication to education and her selection as the 2009 National Superintendent of the Year.

In addition, Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel issued a proclamation calling Hall "an outstanding Georgia Citizen" and "goodwill ambassador."

House Resolution 553, introduced by Rep. Rashad Taylor of Atlanta, said that Hall "has long been recognized by the citizens of this state for the vital role that she has played in the teaching profession and her deep personal commitment to the education of the students of Georgia."

It added that, since Hall became superintendent in 1999, APS schools have seen an increase in on-time graduation rates -- from 39 percent in 2002 to 72 percent in 2008 -- as well as improved test scores and enhanced teacher training.

"Her significant organizational and leadership talents, her remarkable patience and diplomacy, her keen sense of vision and her sensitivity to the needs of the students of this state," said the proclamation, "have earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues, associates, students and community."

Hall said accepted the General Assembly's recognition "on behalf of the many talented and committed people who work for and support Atlanta Public Schools."

She singled out the Atlanta Board of Education, "for their leadership and advocacy;" APS faculty, administrators and staff for "cultivating an environment in which education is the priority and achievement the expectation;" parents and community partners for "embracing (the) public schools;" and students for "their hours for studying, practicing and believing that have generated year-after-year gains across the curriculum and in all grades since 1999.

"When I look at our students," said Hall, "I see our future scientists, educators, legislators and world leaders."
