Atlanta Public Schools PreKindergarten Program

{APS PreK Program}

APS PreKindergarten Program
404-802-3638

The PreKindergarten Program serves approximately 840 four-year-olds in 32 sites throughout the city of Atlanta.  The program helps young children become independent, self-confident and enthusiastic learners.  Pre-K prepares children for success in kindergarten.

While the district wishes it could serve all four-year-olds, only 41 classrooms serving 20 students each are available. The program is 100 percent state funded. There are always more children seeking spaces in Pre-K than there are seats available, and for that reason the school system will use a lottery process as the fairest method of filling classes.

Lottery registration for the 2010-2011 school year will be will be announced in the spring of 2010.

Pre-K Eligibility

A child must be four years of age on or before September 1, 2009. A child is eligible to attend Pre-K for only one year and must live in an Atlanta Public Schools’ attendance zone or be a child of an Atlanta Public Schools’ employee. Children will not be denied participation in the program on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex or disability.

Registration

The Pre-K registration form for the 2009-2010 school year can only be completed by a child’s parent or guardian. The registration form will be available at each registration site. The parent/guardian will indicate on the registration form their first choice, second choice and third choice for enrollment into a PreK classroom. They will also indicate if they only want their first choice to be considered for enrollment into a Pre-K classroom. An APS employee is eligible to complete two Pre-K registration forms, even if they do not live in an APS attendance zone.  The APS badge is required to verify employment with APS.
