Read, Read, Read in 2013!!
Collaboration, Leadership and Technology are the three central themes of the media center. Your input is extremely important to the media center. As teachers design instruction for students, they consider the media center's resources. The print and non print resources are great. If you have not spent time working with the media center staff this academic year, please do so soon.
Students are preparing for the "Read the Most Coast to Coast" celebration on March 1, 2013. On this day, we celebrate Dr, Suess's birthday by taking Accelerated Reader quizzes all day. Guests will visit the media center and read with students and share their special story. Volunteers are needed. Please see Mrs. Walker or Ms. Hogue if you are available to volunteer on this day.
New arrivals will be here soon!!! The media center staff is beyond excited about our new books. An order was placed after the winter break to grow our fiction and nonfiction collection. Check in the media center in a few weeks to see the new titles.
Overdue book notices will go home on Jan. 31, 2013. Please return all overdue books and clear any fines you may have as soon as possible. All fines follow you through 12th grade.

It's September already!! The media center is constantly gaining new titles. This month, I have added over 100 titles!! Some of those 100 books have already been checked out by our 8th graders that read DAILY.
This year we will have a Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. The team will consist of ten members. All are welcome to attend an interest meeting on Wednesday, September 19, 2012. All competition information will be distributed at this time. Transportation home WILL NOT be provided.
Hats Off to Mr. Antwon Willis for his collaborative efforts. We are working together to teach Common Core standards and NETS (National Educational Technology Standards). Our collaboration will result in his sixth grade students being able to access, locate, and evaluate information. Check back in to read my next post to see a sample product from Mr. Willis' students.

Greetings Students,
I hope everyone had a restful summer. We are back in stride in the media center. I have a new assistant in the media center and she is wonderful. Ms. Hogue comes from Maynard Jackson High School. She has worked as a media paraprofessional for more than 20 years. She is very knowledgeable and a pleasant addition to the media center.
It is my hope that you are ready to read! Book checkout has begun and new titles await you in the media center. Please make sure you visit the media center to check out these new titles. The 25 Book Challenge is back and information will be distributed by September 14, 2012.
I have exciting news for this school year. Bunche Middle School will have a Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl team. If you are interested in participating, please see me by 9/10/12. There is a list of titles that you MUST read in order to be a member of the team.

Glogging is sooo HOT!! Teach me how GLOGGIE...Teach me how to GLOGGIE!!!
Yes Chargers....Glogging is my new "teach me how to" technology tool for this month. I am so excited about this multimedia presentation tool. I know you will love this new technology. Once you read a book, I will show you how to create a glog about the book. So hurry and read your first book of the school year. Remember, twenty-five books is the goal for every student this year. While you work on reading that book for your first glog, I will be working with all the Language Arts teachers to create their narrative glog. You will be able to check out their work before you create yours.
New books are in!! I was able to purchase books very early this year. The new Harry Poddy parody is in and it is funny. Walter Dean Myers' books are amongst the newest arrivals. Needless to say, I am really excited about the award winning books I have purchased and the brand new playaways. Play Aways are books that are digital (MP3 format). The entire Twilight series is in the media center as a playaway. Digital books are awesome. I have also purchased eBooks. They havent arrived yet, but when then do I will post/blog it for all to see.
My 2011-2012 challenge to all Chargers is to read your 25 books this year. I believe we can do it. I am reading right along with you. I'm only on book two. Soon, there will be a thermometer in the media center to monitor our book count. I think we can exceed the 25 book goal. Go Chargers!!!

Our newest vehicle of book circulation will be e-Books!!! Woohooo!!! The entire "Twilight" series has been order and I will let you know when the books arrive.
Library Media skills are very important at Bunche. I take very seriously my responsibility to prepare middle school students to be proficient users of technology and have them ready for high school research. I have one request for each student at Bunche. Please, please purchase a portable storage device, jump drive or flash drive to store your work. The cost for a portable storage device is $5.00 on the low end and $20.00 on the high end. These items can be found at Target, Staples or Office Depot. This one piece of technology may prove to be invaluable as you progress through middle and high school.
Volunteers are needed!! Please donate some time. If you are available from 9-3, Monday-Friday, I would certainly appreciate your help.
Happy Reading,
Mrs. Walker
