The media centers at Jackson Main and Jackson Primary are a very busy place. When you visit you will see students reading and checking out books. You might find someone on the computer doing research or a class learning how to use alphabetical order to shelve books in the picture book section. In the middle of the hubbub you will find our staff. Ms. Handley is the media specialist and Mrs. Webb is the media clerk who keeps the primary center humming. Mrs. Sammons spends her time assisting at both campuses. One of the reasons the media center is so busy is in our utilization of the Accelerated Reader program. Accelerated Reader is a computer-based reading management program. The students read a book at their level and upon finishing the book take a quiz. These are recorded by the computer. Teachers are able to use the information generated by this activity to help guide the students in their reading practice. Accelerated Reader is NOT a replacement for reading instruction. It is a tool that records reading practice. Students earn points for passing reading quizzes. Every student in 1st-5th grade has a point goal that is set based on their individual reading levels. Students who meet their goals receive recognition and small incentives to help make it fun. Mostly though, the students are motivated by their own success and the fun they have reading!Check out this month's reading at Jackson! |
