D. H. Stanton's 2011-12 Teacher of the Year Ms. Brenda Street, Media Specialist Brenda Street is beginning her sixth year as media specialist at D. H. Stanton Elementary. She considers her media center “the largest classroom in the school,” and she strives to make it the very hub of the school’s teaching and learning. Through collaborative efforts with teachers of all grade levels, she works with small groups of students, infusing technology into their Social Studies, Science, and Math lessons. Since 2007, Ms. Street’s students have produced 2 technology projects that have won awards at the APS District “One Academic Fair,” 9 projects that were declared winners in both the Georgia Student Media Festival and the International Student Media Festival, and 1 project that was awarded “First Place in Multimedia Applications” at the Georgia Educational Technology Fair. For the past three years, Ms. Street has organized and coached D. H. Stanton’s “Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team.” In 2010, D. H. Stanton’s team won “First Place” at the APS District Bowl and advanced to the regional contest held at Clayton State College. In 2006, Ms. Street turned to grant-writing as a way of funding additional books and literacy programs in her school. To date, she has been awarded 6 grants totaling $18,000 from sources such as The Laura Bush Foundation for America’s Libraries, The Target Corporation, The Lois Lenski Foundation, and The Dollar General Youth Literacy Program. Ms. Street is a member of D. H. Stanton’s LEAD (Design) Team and the school’s PTA. She serves as recorder for the School Support Team, administrator for Accelerated Reader and Study Island, sponsor of the Student Technology Club, and is the school’s Communications Ambassador. Ms. Street’s professional affiliations include membership in the American Library Association (ALA), the American Association of School Librarians (AASL), the Georgia Association of Instructional Technology (GAIT), and the Georgia Library Media Association (GLMA). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Millsaps College and a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College of Education.
