  • May!

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 5/9/2013

May? Wow, how time has flown this year! This week has been particularly speedy with all of the fun activities and announcements. Thanks to all of the parents and volunteers that participated in Spring Fling last Friday evening! It was fun and informative. We also had some great performances this week by our fourth and fifth grade band, chorus, and orchestra. We have some major talent within our school, and they showed it off this week!

I would also like to thank Uncle Maddio's Pizza for hosting a Mary Lin dine-out this week. Dr Mitchell and I had a great time making pizzas and seeing everyone who came out for the event.

Also, if you have not yet heard, Mary Lin Elementary ranked 2nd in the district for performance on the 2011-2012 CCRPI ratings that the Georgia Department of Education published yesterday! We are so proud of our teachers and students! You can read more about the CCRPI here.

    Enjoy your weekend! Ashley

  • Parent Resources

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 12/6/2012
There are a ton of great parent educational resources out there. I want to share a few of my favorites with you. Hopefully, they will be useful to you over the long winter break! Ashley

http://guysread.com/ This site was developed by author Jon Scieszka specifically to target boys of all ages. There are some great book reviews and suggestions, along with guy-focused book categories.

http://pbskids.org/scigirls/ This site is directly linked to the PBS show, Sci Girls, and is funded by the National Science Foundation. Girls can interact with one another about science, view episodes and science experiments, and play science-themed games.

http://suite101.com/article/free-printable-morning-routine-charts-a127786 If your mornings are as busy as mine are at home, this is a great site for morning schedules for kids and some reward ideas for "smooth mornings".

http://mixinginmath.terc.edu/ This site features a host of ideas for incorporating math into everyday activities at home. Research shows that students are given exposure to many more literacy concepts than math concepts at home. Break the cycle!

http://www.4teachers.org/projectbased/24wrt.shtml Are you tired of asking your child to correct mistakes in his/her homework? This link allows you to customize a proofreading checklist specific to your child's needs. Your child will "own" the mistakes more if they have the control of correcting them independently.

  • Response to Intervention Power Point presentations

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 10/10/2012

Thanks to everyone who came out last Friday morning for the Principal's coffee. Carey Rogers and I took some time to explain the way that Response to Intervention (RTI) works here at Mary Lin. We had a lot of good questions and discussion. I have attached the Power Point presentations in case any of you who were unable to attend wanted to check them out. Thanks!

There was also a question about what standards students may miss while making the transition from GPS to Common Core. The Georgia Department of Education has outlined those standards in the area of English Language Arts.

  • What are Universal Screeners?

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 9/6/2012
Some of you may have heard the term "Universal Screener" during your parent/teacher conference or even from your child during dinner conversation. What are Universal Screeners and what purpose do they serve?

Universal Screeners are quick, low-cost, standardized assessments that consist of age-appropriate skills given three times per year to evaluate our students in the areas of literacy, math, and writing fluency. We often compare screeners to large fishing nets that we cast a few times a year to "catch" students who are below grade level expectations with their foundational skills in the above-mentioned content areas. We are very much aware that if a student lacks proficiency in basic math calculation, then it will be difficult for that child to acquire the Common Core math standards that he/she is expected to master during the year. It is our goal to analyze the data from the Universal Screeners in order to implement specific interventions for those students. The first screener window for the year is occurring now. Be sure to discuss the results of your child's assessments with his/her teacher during your fall parent/teacher conference. I have included the assessment schedule here. Please reach out to me if you have any questions!  Ashley

  • New year, new standards

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 8/10/2012

Thanks for a great first week of school! I have enjoyed seeing many familiar faces and meeting some of the new members of our Mary Lin family.

We appreciate all of you who were able to attend the Principal's Coffee this morning. There was a lot of information presented, so reach out to us if we can help clarify anything for you.

Several of you inquired about the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards in English Language Arts and Math. You can learn more about what your child is expected to learn in those content areas here. Please remember that the standards for the areas of Social Studies and Science will remain the same. The Georgia Performance Standards for those subjects can be found on this site. Simply click on the content area on the left side of the screen and select your child's grade level.

Please reach out if you have any questions about the above. Thanks for being an integral part of the Mary Lin Team!

    Thanks,
    Ashley

  • Section 504 Parent Guide

Posted by Ashley Adamo at 6/14/2012
Looking for a quality definition of Section 504? I recently found this document on the Georgia Department of Education's website. It not only gives a quality definition of Section 504, it also describes the eligibility process as it pertains to public schools. I hope you find it helpful.
