Joseph Emerson Brown Middle School is located in the heart of the historic West End community, just southwest of downtown Atlanta, and a stone’s throw from the renowned Atlanta University Center. Our motto at Brown is “Right Teaching ... Right Learning ... At the Right Time!" Uniform Policy Our students are required to wear a uniform to school everyday. Uniforms consist of white collared shirts, ties, and khaki bottoms for male students. Female students are required to dress in the school plaid skirt or khaki bottoms with a white, collared shirt. Navy blue blazers, navy or white sweaters, and navy vests are also a part of our uniform policy. The Gifted Academy Our gifted academy is designed to offer those students who excel academically the chance to engage in an instructional program that offers the necessary rigor and challenge to help the students reach their full potential. Students enrolled in this academy are identified gifted students. The teachers in this academy are specially trained to offer our gifted students enhanced instruction and advanced content.
The Single Gender Academies All grade levels are organized into gender academies. We have a floor for boys and a floor for girls. Research has shown that at this age boys and girls learn differently and same gender classes offer each gender the opportunity to take advantage of instruction geared toward their learning styles. The approach has been utilized for more than three years and has shown positive results.
