“Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think.” -Albert Einstein

Dear students, parents, community and partners,

Welcome back to the 2017-2018 school year! Once again, thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve the most important members of society, our children. I do not accept this responsibility lightly. I strongly believe that what children experience during their formable years determines what types of people they will one day become. Therefore, as the school leader of M. Agnes Jones Elementary (MAJ), I must ALWAYS be committed to leading a high quality academic program, supportive environment and an abundance of rich learning opportunities for our students.

Our expectations are very high for students and many times we are told, “They (MAJ) do too much!” We accept that as a major compliment because WE CAN NEVER DO TOO MUCH or DEMAND TOO MUCH from OUR STUDENTS!!! This past school year, the students, faculty and staff did what some thought could not be done by our school. We became the FIRST Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) certified school in the Atlanta Public Schools System. The STEM certification is granted by the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE). It is a very rigorous process. In fact, on February 27, 2017, when M. Agnes Jones was awarded STEM certification by the GADOE team, there were only 22 schools in the entire state who had earned the distinguished title.

In order for our school to accomplish all that we do, it takes everyone, including students, parents, faculty/staff, community and partners. M. Agnes Jones has been very fortunate to have forged a strong bond with each of these groups of stakeholders. Moreover, the MAJ GO-Team continues to be supportive in making the right decisions to ensure students stay on a journey of success.

The 2017-2018 school year will inevitably be a year of strengthening and pushing to even higher levels of greatness. Our priorities will continue to be on increasing student achievement in reading and math while staying committed to the rigorous standards as a STEM certified school.

Finally, I have an open door policy, so please feel free to call me or come by the office to see me. You are ALWAYS welcome at M. Agnes Jones! We are ONE SCHOOL, ONE FAMILY!!

Warmest regards,

Dr. Margul Retha Woolfolk
