During the summer break, YMS strongly encourages scholars to dive into a good book! Summer is the perfect time to get a jump start on the upcoming school year! The Media Team (comprised of media speacialists, students, parents, and teachers) have comprised a list of required readings for the Fall.
Jean Childs Young Middle School was awarded the 2012-2013 Nutrition Department's School of the Year. This award recognizes the school that stands out for showing leadership, outstanding numbers, food quality, cleanliness, and just going above and beyond for the school year in regards to Nutrition. Throughout the year, cafeterias were closely monitored through unannounced visits to ensure that nutritional standards were being upheld. Mrs. Mixon, cafeteria manager, and her staff were rated 'Excellent'.

Young Middle School was a force to be reckoned with in sports playoffs this year with the YMS Football Team playing in this year's Domecoming, Young's Softball team competing in the playoffs and both Young's Girls and Boys Basketball team playing in the Championship walking away with the APS Middle School Girls Champion title. One of the Civil War Historians/Reenactors, Brad Quinlin, played a role in the oscar-winning movie "Glory".

A special thanks to Operation Hope for Launching their Hope Business in a Box Program, in which students pitch businesses to Atlanta businessmen and businesswomen, here at Young. Judges deliberated on the winners and these students will move on to the next phase of the competition.
Young Middle School is participating in the Box Tops For Education program. Students collect Box Tops from a variety of products to earn cash for our school. This is a great way to help raise funds by sending in something that you would normally discard from products you probably already have in your home. Don't throw away a valuable resource!
Eric Herdnon is a 2012 - 2013 Families Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education. As a winner, he received $7,500 to fund a school project and professional development opportunity. Congrats once again, Mr. Herndon. This award is well-deserved as Mr. Herndon has demonstrated a passion for teaching and serving the students at Jean Childs Young Middle School for seven years.

The PSAT is an excellent way to find out. This standardized test will be administered at Young Middle School Registration Deadline Oct 5th. The cost is $14.00 cash. Please see your grade level counselor for registration. It's not too late!! Counselors will be here Tuesday to receive registrations.

Ms. Stevens', Literacy Teacher and sponsor for Collice Walton (National Finalist) was awarded a trip to Washington, DC to the Do the Write Thing Summit that will be held this summer! These students' submissions were selected from hundreds of submissions in the district. The “Do the Write Thing” program challenges students to reduce violence and its impact on their lives. Collice Walton (former YMS Student) was selected as the National male finalist from APS. His sponsor, Ms. Stevens, will attend the DTWT week long summit in Washington, DC as a prize for being selected! Way to go!!

Move On When Ready is a dual-enrollment opportunity for students to attend a postsecondary institution full-time during their junior and/or senior year of high school. Students will receive high school credit simultaneously while attending college classes on the collge campus full-time. Approved college online classes can be taken that meet high school graduation requirements.
The EYL Pamper Me Pretty Lock-In was held Friday, March 16, 2012. Pamper Me Pretty was all about encouraging girls to believe in themselves, have high self-esteem and make good life choices. The program began at 4pm with Zumba. Next there was Self-Esteem, Etiquette, and dinner. Pamper Me Pretty ended at 10pm after the breakout sessions that included:Nail Care, Make-up/Skin Care, and Fitness.
7th grade teacher, Dr. Sandra Canterbury and 8th grade teacher, Mr. Donald Johnson for being selected as Resident Advisors for the 2012-2013 Atlanta Urban Teacher Residency (AUTR) program. Our teachers were chosen from a large pool of candidates and had to undergo a rigorous interviewing process before being selected as Resident Advisors. Read more by selecting title.

Former Atlanta Falcons Bobby Butler and Buddy Curry visited the YMS After School All-Stars Program to teach Character Skills! Through their unique Youth Football Experience, these gentlemen encourage our students and shared with them character development skills that will benefit our All Stars throughout the course of their lives. They spoke to over 200 scholars for an hour, and Starbucks provided all students and faculty members with refreshments. They gave away over $100 in Starbucks gift certificates and left a lasting impression on our students.
YMS Counselors coordinate a School-wide College Expo February 22nd that entailed guests speakers for every class and a panel discussion/forum by grade level. Scholars were actively engaged and openly discoursed with professionals from colleges across the country.

The YMS Orchestra represented Young at a metro Atlanta Orchestra festival February 14th at Alpharetta High School in Fulton County with Straight "Superior" ratings.
Young Scholars Attend the 2012 HBCU College Expo at Cobb Galleria Saturday Feb. 11th with EYL Club Co-Sponsored by Counselor Wright . The expo featured Historically Black Colleges and Universities and other colleges throughout the country. Students thought the expo was informative, as well as, entertaining.

The Saturday Academy is an academic support program designed to provide opportunities for students in grades 3–8, who need additional support with deepening their application and understanding of mathematics and/or developing grade level literacy skills outside of the traditional academic day.
