Pre-Medical: Biotechnology Research & Development Pathway
Welcome to an exciting and trailblazing pathway which enables scholars to become critical thinkers and problem solvers! If you have a strong interest in the medical field, possess a desire to help others experience a high quality of life, and thrive while conducting research this pathway awaits you. Discover medical greats such as Henrietta Lacks, whose stolen cells became an important medical tool, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. The second course in the career pathway introduces students to the fundamentals of biotechnology. Included in this course is a basic overview of current trends and careers in biotechnology. Additionally, emphasis on basic laboratory skills along with the business, regulatory, and ethical aspects of biotechnology is included. The knowledge and skills gained in this course will provide students with a broad understanding of biotechnology and its impact on society and with a set of foundation skills for entry into the career pathway.
Applications of Biotechnology further introduce students to the fundamentals of biotechnology. Included in this course are additional applications and techniques in biotechnology, which expand and increase the student’s comprehension of how biotechnology utilizes living systems to create products and enhance lives. Further, laboratory applications learned in this course form the pivotal component distinguishing science theory from its application in bioscience much like that of engineering and mathematics. Bioscience and the application of laboratory technique to the manipulation of living systems is a cornerstone of pharmaceutical, medical device, forensic science, environmental science, agriculture, alternative fuel, and green chemistry.
