Atlanta Public Schools partners with Communities-In Schools of Atlanta to operate the West End Academy Performance Learning Center (WEA-PLC).  Although located in the West Region, the WEA-PLC   is designed to serve 150+ eligible eleventh and twelfth graders attending any of the Atlanta Public High Schools.  This is a non-traditional program addressing the needs of at risk students, who may or may not be succeeding in the regular school environment.  At the WEA-PLC students have access to individualized on-line curricula, allowing them to work at their own pace.  They are also provided mentors, and special opportunities to participate in job shadowing, internships, and service learning projects.  Students attending the WEA-PLC may return to their home/zone schools to receive their high school diplomas.  Upon completion of all graduation requirements by the end of the first semester, students may receive a first semester diplomas.  In addition Communities-In Schools sponsors a college scholarship fund for Performance Learning Center graduates.

The West End Academy – PLC offers a unique experience with a holistic approach that focuses on social, physical, emotional, and intellectual growth.  This program is a re-conceptualization of the traditional high school.  In order for students to experience success in the program and to become productive citizens in a global world, parental and community involvement is paramount.

The West End Academy –PLC has been designated as a Promise Place by America’s Promise Alliance (America’s Promise).  “A Promise Place is any school, community center, place of worship, business, or organization that provides youth with the Alliance’s Five Promises – Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, Effective Education, and Opportunities to Help Others – under one roof.”  As a Promise Place, the West End Academy –PLC has earned the distinction of becoming a local partner in the Grad Nation Campaign, a ten-year effort to mobilize the nation to end the high school dropout crisis and prepare young people for college and the 21st century workforce.  In addition to receiving a certificate of achievement and a decal identifying it as a Promise Place, the WEA-PLC is a part of the Grad Nation campaign and join a network of several other Promise Places both locally and nationwide able to share and receive information on how best to provide more Promises to local youth.  The initiative is presented by State Farm Insurance.  To learn more about America’s Promise Alliance go to www.americaspromise.org.
