• The Atlanta Board of Education places a high priority on the importance of a planned and continuing program of professional development of its members. The central purpose of the program is to enhance the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of public school governance in our community. The Board Development Committee plans specific in-service activities designed to assist Board Members in their efforts to improve their skills as members of a policy-making body, expand their knowledge about trends, issues, and new ideas in public education, and deepen their insights into the nature of leadership in a modern democratic society. Board Members are expected to prepare for, attend, and fully participate in all such activities. All Board Members and the Board as a whole shall comply with board training requirements as outlined in state law and state board rules.

Committee Members: Cynthia Briscoe Brown (Chair), Aretta Baldon and Leslie Grant

Purpose and Scope of Professional Development

The Board Development Committee also endeavors to make Board Members aware of individual opportunities for growth and professional development.

The Board considers participation in the following activities consistent with the professional development of its members:

    •   Conferences, workshops, conventions, and training and information sessions held by the state and national school boards associations and other conferences sponsored by local, state, and national educational organizations.

    •   Meetings of local, state, or national organizations  at which the Board desires representation in discussions on public education policy and advocacy which affect Atlanta Public Schools.

A Board Member who has been appointed as the Board’s official representative to an organization is expected to attend and participate in relevant meetings. Other Board Members are encouraged to attend within the parameters of the Board travel expense policy and the performance of their regular Board duties.
