Welcome to Mr. Emerson's Math Class
Sylvan Hills Middle School
7th Grade Math Class
UNIT 1= Operations with Rational Numbers
OBJECTIVES: SWBAT show that a number and its opposite have a sum of 0 (additive inverse). They will also be able t describe situations in which opposite quantities combine to make ).
MGSE7.NS.1b= S.W. understand p+q as the number located a distance /Q/ form /P/, in the positive or negative direction depending on whether "Q" is positive or negative. Students will also be able to interpret sums of rational numbers by describing real world contexts.

*This is a student-centered course where we spend time discovering and investigating math concepts based on the critical-thinking and problem-solving rigor of the Georgia Standards of Excellence. You will learn how each concept is important in everyday life. Students will work independently, in cooperative groups, with activities using manipulatives, and participate in classroom discussions. Technology is an integral part of communicating science and will be included as often as possible. The rigorous standards demand high quality performance of all students while making provisions for remediation. The objectives of this course is for students to become more confident about lifelong science skills, make connections to real-world applications, participate in problem-solving through group and individual investigations, and develop better communication skills.
Math: In Grade 7, instructional time will focus on four critical areas:
(1) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships;
(2) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions & linear equations;
(3) solving problems involving scale drawings and informal geometric constructions, and working with two and three-dimensional shapes to solve problems involving area, surface area, and volume, and
(4) drawing inferences about populations based on samples.
