What is the Elementary Student Experience in AVA?
AVA Jr is committed to providing rich opportunities for all of our K-5 students to learn and grow during the online experience. We look forward to engaging with families in new ways. As families adapt to teaching and learning online, we expect this information will make the transition easier. While the virtual learning experience may vary by grade level, families can expect:
Daily learning time includes Reading, Science, Social Studies, and Math
Health, P.E. and Art
Independent Reading (15 - 30 minutes daily)
And a host of other appropriate learning activities!
Atlanta Public School students in Grades K-5 may receive full-time instruction through AVA Jr. Instruction in the virtual elementary program will be provided by Atlanta Virtual Academy teachers using the Freckle platform for K-5 to support virtual instruction.
There will be scheduled real time lessons combined with asynchronous learning experiences and attendance will be recorded. Assignments will be graded and grading practices appropriate for a full-time elementary virtual classroom will be developed. Parents and students will be required to participate in a virtual school orientation session upon enrollment. We take pride in our virtual instructional program's strong curriculum and accountability that is provided to our students.
What you can expect from your AVA Teacher?
Teachers will provide virtual support and live instruction via the Live Virtual Learning Classroom. Students who need additional support are just a click away from their online instructor. Additionally, teachers will use a multi-tiered approach to support student learning and ensure academic success. Teachers will conduct virtual huddle sessions with students to create community and momentum in their online course. For our elementary students, the AVA teachers will provide daily synchronous learning sessions.
What is the Parent Experience? This is how we support parents.
Parents are encouraged to keep students on their “at home school schedule” and ensure they have a dedicated learning space in the home. Parents will receive daily reports of their students' progress during the Fall and Spring semesters.
Parents will have the opportunity to attend the virtual Parent Orientation where you will learn how to support your learner and stay informed. Parents can also attend weekly tutoring sessions with their students if they desire. AVA staff shares with parents strategies for successful completion of their students' courses such as recommended assignments to complete daily, how to remediate in order to improve and demonstrate mastery and excel.
