As we quickly approach Spring Break, please know that safety and security continue to be one of our top priorities. While our primary goal is to focus on learning, efforts are ongoing to provide the safest learning environment possible for every child at Booker T. Washington High School.

We will implement several security precautions to ensure a safe and incident-free school, pre-Spring Break week.  We need your help to achieve this goal.  Please speak to your child regarding the following safety precautions:

1.Students will not be allowed access to school lockers after Wednesday 3/30.

2.Students cannot bring large book bags or purses during the week before Spring Break (Wednesday 3/30 – 4/1).  If a student brings a large bookbag or purse, the item will be confiscated and returned to the parent/guardian.

3.Students should immediately leave the campus at the end of each school day (3:45 p.m.).  Students are not allowed to loiter on the campus after school hours for any reason.

4.Bullying, pranks, and other forms of misbehavior will immediately be addressed and consequences assigned accordingly.

    POWER OUTAGE

Greetings Washington High School Families. We are calling to make you aware of a power outage at our school. Georgia Power initially estimated the power to resume and 3:00p.m.  Thankfully, the power was restored much earlier but we had unfortunately began the dismissal process at 11:38a.m., for our walkers as we awaited the bus arrivals on campus. As buses arrived, we released those students. Students were provided an opportunity to take a grab and go lunch. Buses will bring bus riders home. Families who need to pick up students should meet their student at the front of the school. We will be in touch if there are any additional updates.  I thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Thank you.

    Campus Security Transition Protocol

    Good Day Parents,
In accordance with our commitment to campus safety, please note our newly established transition protocol. During transition sweeps, the school will not receive visitors.  This happens several periods of the day.  Transition periods are moments when students move from one class to another, over a five-minute time span. The security team then sweeps each floor to ensure all students are in class and all exit doors are securely closed and locked. While this process does not take long, it will cause moments of wait time throughout the day. We will post a sign on the door informing visitors that we are conducting transition safety checks and will resume check-in clearance shortly.
I ask that you consider this shift in practice during: late arrivals, early dismissal, appointment check-outs and conferences. I do recognize the temporary inconvenience this may cause but thank you in advance for supporting our implementation of increased safety practices.  We will continue to look for new ways to enhance our school safety efforts and appreciate your continued support.
We SHALL Rise to new levels of school safety...together!
    Much Love,
    Dr. Angela Coaxum-Young, Ed.D
    Principal

    Robocall Message

    January 2-January 8

    January 2, 2022

    Good Day Washington Family!

Happy New Year! As you are aware, out of the abundance of caution and our commitment to maintaining a safe environment, the district will begin the Spring Semester virtually.  The tentative dates for virtual learning for students are: 1/4/2021 – 1/7/2021.  As information updates, it will be shared with you immediately. Teachers will utilize the Zoom Platform to conduct class virtually.  I have compiled a few quick notes to ensure your student begins class on time and their attendance is accounted for:

    Technology Distribution:

By now, your student should have been issued a device.  If your student has a lost, stolen or damaged device, they can retrieve a loaner device from the school on Monday, (1/3/2022) and Tuesday (1/4/2022) from 9:00a.m. – 3:30p.m.  Students who’ve never received a device may also pick one up during the times listed.  Students should arrive at the security check point (1st floor, under the stairs) to check out a device.  Students are encouraged to bring their damaged devices with them so that they can be submitted for repair while using the loaner.

    Accessing New Schedules:

Your student should be able to access their spring term schedule through infinite campus.  This will help them determine which classes they will need to retrieve google classroom codes for.  If your student cannot access infinite campus, please have them reach out to Katherine King-Taylor through the BTW Google Classroom at: ildx7op or click on this link for direct access: https://classroom.google.com/c/MTI3Mjc2MDE3MzEw?cjc=ildx7op.

    --Robocall Important Message

    Dear Parents or Guardians

As we continue to seek ways to ensure we maximize our safety and security protocols, we are strengthening our transition, dismissal, and overall safety processes.  Please make note of the following procedural shifts designed to support our commitment to student safety:

We have determined it necessary to redesign our dismissal plan. Our new dismissal procedures will begin on Wednesday, September 29, 2021.   Bus loading cards will be used to inform students of their bus zone report locations beginning at 3:30 p.m. As buses arrive on campus, they will be loaded one by one and immediately exited.  Students who do not get to their bus loading zone in a timely manner, will run the risk of missing their bus home. Once a bus is called for loading from the designated zone, students will have three minutes to load the bus, buses will roll at the fourth minute.  If a student fails to load the bus in a timely fashion, parents will be called for pick up.  Car Riders will no longer exit from the front of the building, the car line will form around the back of the building in the upper parking lot.  As parents arrive, car riders will be called from the cafeteria and dismissed to load cars.  This will help us significantly reduce the traffic in the front of the building at dismissal. Walkers will be dismissed at 3:45 p.m. once we have cleared buses from the front of the building.

We are instituting a clear book bag policy beginning October 18, 2021. Parents are encouraged to begin purchasing clear book bags in advance of this date.  We are providing lockers for students (free of charge) who would prefer to store necessary items during the day in lieu of a clear book bag.  In addition, the school recognizes that due to hardships, some students may need help securing a book bag.  Students in need of a clear book back due to hardship may see Ms. Bambo, to be provided one as supplies last. Beginning October 18, 2021- any non-clear bookbag entering will be retrieved at the security checkpoint and held until the end of the school day for the remainder of October.

School identification badges will now be required for entrance and transition throughout the building.  We will begin taking student ID photos this week.  Once we have captured the photos and printed IDs for all of our students, they will be required to wear their ID badge at all times while on campus. A three-way communication will go out before we begin our ID for entry protocol.

As a final note, we have made the recommendation to add a third school officer to our family.  We hope to get this position approved and onboarded expeditiously.  We appreciate your support of our efforts to ensure safety and we believe that together, we can sustain a school known for our academic success and innovative measures designed to ensure safety.  We are the Standard!

--Robocall September 17 SAT for Seniors

     Dear Parent(s) or Guardian(s):

During the 2021-2022 school year, The Atlanta Public School System (APS) will administer the SAT to all students in the Class of 2022 who opt to sit for the SAT School Day assessment on Thursday, October 28, 2021. SAT School Day provides schools, districts, and states a way to offer the SAT to juniors and seniors in school on a weekday, expanding access to a globally recognized college admission test that's widely accepted at U.S. colleges. The closure of numerous SAT Saturday testing sites during the COVID-19 pandemic severely limited testing opportunities for students, particularly students in the Class of 2022. The October 28, 2021 SAT School Day administration is limited to students in the 2022 cohort.

We ask that all parents complete the https://bit.ly/Fall2021SAT by September 21, 2021, to register their student for the October 28, 2021 administration of SAT School Day. In partnership with Achieve Atlanta, APS allocated funds to pay exam fees for only students in the Class of 2022 to participate in SAT School Day. Students in the class of 2023 will participate in SAT School Day in the spring.

By breaking down barriers to access, SAT School Day can profoundly impact a community—opening doors to college, scholarships, and financial aid for every student. Parents/Guardians and students may prepare for the SAT School Day assessment by utilizing https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/sat/practice/full-length-practice-tests. This link provides essential test details, familiarizes students with question types and information on the SAT exam.

    SAT School Day Administration Process:

    1. Parents/Guardians must complete the https://bit.ly/Fall2021SAT by September 21, 2021, to register their student for the October 28, 2021 administration of the SAT School Day exam.

    2. Class of 2022 participation information will be communicated via calling post, phone call, Email, Remind, etc. Please ensure accurate contact information is included on the opt-in form.

    3. Students must wear face-covering or masks for the entire test administration.

**The Atlanta Public School System will follow all Georgia Health Department and the Center for Disease Control Health and Safety Guidelines related to the COVID-19 pandemic. **

**If students are showing signs of fever, cough, runny nose, chills, or any other cold-like symptoms, they should not participate in this administration. **

If you have any questions regarding SAT School Day, please contact your site-based test coordinator, Dr. Erica Clark Erica.clark@atlanta.k12.ga.us, (404) 802-4645

    Sincerely,

    Erica Clark, PhD

    Professional School Counselor
