Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a prevention framework used in Atlanta Public Schools (APS) to help students achieve their full potential and reduce behavioral issues. MTSS is a school-wide system that combines assessment and intervention to support students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
MTSS is based on three tiers of instruction and intervention:
Tier 1: All students receive a high-quality, guaranteed curriculum and instruction.
Tier 2: Students receive targeted interventions for specific skill deficits. They may still attend Tier 1 lessons with the rest of the class, but they also receive more targeted support through small group lessons.
Tier 3: Students receive intensive individualized support, which may include small group work or individual lessons. They may spend more time in a resource room than before, but most of the day is still spent in the general education classroom.
MTSS promotes a well-integrated system that connects general, gifted, and special education with intervention and enrichment services.
