The Atlanta Public Schools’ Professional Development Department is anchored by the districts strategic plan. In efforts to increase teacher instructional capacity, the APS professional learning department provided intensive support on the key district initiatives. Opportunities offered by the Professional Learning Office, support the district's 5 year strategic plan and balanced scorecard.
Seven Step Lesson Plan
Based on the research of John Hattie’s seminal text, Visible Learning, the Atlanta Public School System employed a seven step lesson planning protocol. The department of professional learning supported this endeavor with yearlong training and support as it was implemented in all schools at all grade levels.

Marzano’s High Yield Strategies
To support the implementation of a seven step lesson planning protocol, the Atlanta Public School System unrolled intensive training on the effective use of Robert J. Marzano’s research regarding the nine high yield strategies that increase student learning.
Employing the HUB train the trainer model of professional development, ALL district instructional coaches and professional learning specialist received instructional resources and learning from renowned presenter Dan Mulligan and went into each APS school to train teachers on the effective use of these strategies within the instructional framework.
