Sovereign Immunity
Atlanta Public Schools is a political subdivision of the State of Georgia and is therefore protected by sovereign immunity. Under Georgia law, sovereign immunity limits the district’s legal responsibility for paying certain types of claims for damages unless immunity has been specifically waived by statute or through applicable insurance coverage. This legal protection allows the district to focus resources on its core mission of serving students and supporting public education.
