About The Board

The Atlanta Board of Education (ABOE) is the governing body responsible for establishing policy and providing oversight for Atlanta Public Schools (APS). The Board consists of nine elected members who represent geographic districts across the city and three at-large districts, and who provide strategic direction to ensure the educational needs of students and families are met. One person is elected per district to represent the schools within that district for a four-year term.
The Board's core responsibilities include adopting policies aligned to the district's mission and vision; approving the annual budget and overseeing APS financial operations to ensure responsible resource allocation; and hiring, evaluating, and supervising the Superintendent, who serves as the district's chief executive officer. Board members also engage with the community to gather feedback, address concerns, and strengthen trust and transparency.
The Board holds regular monthly meetings and convenes special meetings as needed, all of which are open to the public for participation and input. Governance work is supported through several standing committees, including Budget, Policy Review, Audit, Board Development, and Accountability, each focused on advancing key areas of Board responsibility.
