About Language Arts
The English/Language Arts (ELA) Department of Benjamin E. Mays High School is committed to offering our students a rigorous and challenging curriculum where students explore themes of linguistic and cultural diversity and develop critical and creative thinking skills through class discussions, oral/written presentations, and research. Our faculty aims to prepare students for college and career and expose students to multiple perspectives through reading, writing, and communication skills. Additionally, our English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program provides support for English language acquisition and proficiency and supports students’ and parents’ needs to ensure our English learners are successful.
The ELA Department offers the following courses: Ninth Grade Literature, World Literature and Composition, American Literature, British Literature, Dramatic Writing, Oral and Written Communication, Writer’s Workshop, Reading Enrichment, Advanced Composition, AP Literature, and AP Language. Students are required to complete a minimum of four (4) ELA courses to satisfy their English graduation requirement.
