• Innovation…Girls and Minorities in Robotics

     Innovation is tied to developments in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Due to the ever-changing global landscape, it is important to prepare the upcoming generations and arm them with an arsenal of knowledge and critical thinking skills that will ensure further innovation to allow for continued advancements in areas which greatly impact quality of life and our nation’s economy. The heart of innovation lies in research in the areas previously noted.

    The mission of Fickett Elementary School is to produce students who are able to be globally competitive contributors to society. It is important to develop the needed skill sets in all our students to increase the amount of minorities and women represented in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through our robotics program, we aim to promote the mission of FIRST robotics which is listed below and is found the on www.usfirst.org  website: 

    …to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

     The faculty and staff of Fickett Elementary School understands that the only real limitation placed upon our upcoming generations are the ones that they place upon themselves. Early exposure in the STEM areas will foster a far extending love of the technical sciences.


     STEM Program Components

    There are several components that contribute to the STEM program at Fickett Elementary School.  These components are Project Based Learning Approach in teaching Mathematics and Science, FIRST Lego League Robotics Competition program, STEM Enrichment Block with Lego We Do Robotics and Engineering is Elementary programs, STEM to STEAM: Art and Technology, Future City 5th Grade Projects, and STEM Exposure program.
