FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics Competition Program
The robotics program was implemented as a curriculum in gifted classes during the 2012-2013 school year. While all of the gifted students at Fickett Elementary School were exposed to robotics, only twenty students participated in the FIRST Lego League (FLL) Robotics teams. The two FLL teams competed at the Drew Charter Qualifier event and Clayton State University Super Regional events where they won three awards. This was an exceptional feat for a rookie team. Two classroom teachers, Ms. Taylor and Mr. Little, served as their coach and UPS Scholars volunteered to mentor the teams with programming and building the robot. Our Fickett students were able to participate in the FLL Robotics Competition program through our collaboration with UPS, 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Boeing, GA Tech CEISMC, and Atlanta Public School Science department. For the 2013-2014 school year, our FLL Robotics Competition program will grow to include students in the 4th and 5th grades.
