GATE Eligibility Criteria Updates

New Information about Eligibility for Gifted and Talented (GATE)

Beginning this school year (2024-25), all referrals for gifted testing are automatically generated by the APS Office of Gifted and Talented (OGATE). Accordingly, parent and teacher referrals will no longer apply. OGATE will use all MAP Growth scores from the previous two years to initiate automatic referrals for students. If a child’s achievement percentile ranking (PR) is at or above 85 for students in 1st-5th grades on any MAP Growth test administered within the past two years, they will be automatically referred for eligibility testing. Students in 1st-5th grades will be tested in the fall. Kindergarten students will be tested in the spring and will need a MAP Growth PR score of 90 or higher to be considered for an automatic referral.

ALL PARENTS WILL BE NOTIFIED BY EMAIL IF THEIR CHILD IS REFERRED BY OUR AUTOMATIC SYSTEM. Therefore, It is imperative that the email address for the child’s primary contact in Infinite Campus is correct. AGAIN, THIS IS THE ONLY WAY YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED THAT YOUR CHILD HAS BEEN REFERRED. Please visit this website for information on how to activate your parent portal login or how to login if you've already created an account.

Please visit the Atlanta Public Schools Gifted and Talented website for more information. You will find answers to frequently asked questions about how we identify, serve, enrich, and support gifted students: https://www.atlantapublicschools.us/Page/20890. You may contact Michell Carter, Mary Lin GATE Lead, at micarter@apsk12.org with any questions.

Ms. Bringslid will discuss these changes in detail at the August Principal's Coffee at 8:00 am on Friday, August 23 in the Media Center.
