After receiving extensive feedback from parents, staff and community members on the 2018-2019 school calendar, the Atlanta Board of Education voted to amend the student calendar this past Monday, making Election Day, November 6, 2018, a staff professional learning day and a student holiday (students are not in school).
Changing Election Day to a student holiday will help mitigate traffic and security concerns for our 22 school sites that serve as polling sites. It will also provide an important opportunity for us to provide valuable professional learning for staff, such as safety and security training.
A safety and security training is currently being developed by our Office of Safety and Security with national school security experts. This training will be mandatory for all school-based staff. More specific details regarding the training will be provided in the near future.
