Principal's Corner

As unique as we all are, an awful lot of us want the same things.
~ Brené Brown

Our uniqueness is a wonderful thing, but those traits that make us one-of-a-kind individuals can also make us feel isolated. As adults, we can look back and appreciate how our uniqueness contributed positively to our lives. This isn't always the case for young people who want nothing more than to fit in. But, we can help them celebrate their individuality. We can remind them that the very ones who are responsible for the greatest innovations are often those who think and act differently from the rest. And, we can empower ourselves with this truth as well. We all need some encouragement to live our best lives in our own unique and unrepeatable way.

On Friday the Georgia Department of Education released the official College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) score for every public school in the state, including Springdale Park. This is the second year of results under the redesigned CCRPI, which uses four components to measure school's overall performance:

Content Mastery - Measures achievement of students in English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science and Social Studies.

Progress - A measure of growth in ELA and Math that students have made relative to academically-similar students across Georgia, and measure of progress English language learners are making towards proficiency in the English language.

Closing Gaps - Measures the extent to which all students and all student subgroups are meeting annual achievement improvement targets (based on Georgia Milestones).

Readiness - A measure of literacy, student attendance, and enrichment beyond core academic subjects.

While there is no single benchmark measurement of our progress as educators each year, CCRPI is significant. Based on this measurement, our score for the 2018-2019 school year is a 96.7!  Woohoo!  Congratulations!

This is 4.3 points higher than the previous year and it is the highest score SPARK has received in the history of state CCRPI reporting!

Over the past five years, Atlanta Public Schools has focused on strengthening our academic program throughout the district. Here at SPARK we have done the same while focusing on balanced literacy, higher academic rigor within the classroom and differentiation for all students. This approach, along with hard work and dedication from our students, teachers, staff, and administrative team is producing positive results! This is wonderful news for our school and community!

In addition to our outstanding overall score of 96.7, for the first time in our school's history we received a 5 STAR climate rating!  School climate ratings are calculated using four components: 1) student, teacher, and parent perceptions of a school's climate; 2) student discipline; 3) a safe and substance-free learning environment; and 4) school-wide attendance.  This climate rating is simply icing on the cake!

While we are so pleased with this score, please be mindful that fluctuations in student attendance impact this score annually.  I encourage you to do your best to have your child in school every day, on time, so valuable instructional time is not lost.  Let's continue working together to ensure that all of our students remain on the path to being ready for college and career and that SPARK is living up to its fullest potential!

We hope you had a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Terry Harness
