Specials

HAES offers multiple opportunities to engage scholars in classes outside of the core – Dance, Music, Health, Physical Education, STEM lab, Spanish, Library Science, Reading and Mathematics Support.

4th and 5th grade scholars will have the opportunity to have “Super Specials” one day a week. The “Super Specials” are in addition to the regularly offered specials.

The “Super Specials” descriptions are below:

Band:         Our band program will focus on the basic instrumental skill development and music reading. The goal of this class is to teach scholars the proper way to hold and play a brass, percussion, or woodwind instrument with the characteristic tone quality of the instrument. Scholars can elect to play their instrument of choice with the band director’s approval and recommendation. Scholars will display their abilities during at least two arts showcase during the school year. Due to performance expectations, time outside of regular class is required.

Dance:       Our program will introduce and demonstrate movement as an expression of creative thinking, cultural and historical significance, along with understanding its impact on wellness and dance techniques. Scholars will display their abilities during at least one arts showcase during the school year. Due to performance expectations, time outside of regular class is required.

Chorus:      Our program will provide opportunities for scholars to increase performance skills and knowledge in large group choral singing. This class covers performance and production, analysis and theoretical studies, historical and cultural contributions and influences, creative aspects of music and appreciation of music. Scholars will display their abilities during at least one arts showcase during the school year. Due to performance expectations, time outside of regular class is required.

STEM:        Our program provides scholars with a solid foundation for understanding mathematical concepts and teaches efficient use of computational skills and problem-solving strategies. This class also focuses on earth, physical, and life sciences, learning about scientific processes through hands-on experimentation and field trips. Technology is integrated into the curriculum at all levels of learning using iPads, SmartBoards, Lego Robotics and more.
