Editors/Producers/Reporters: The following is a list of events, programs, accomplishments, and/or initiatives occurring in Atlanta Public Schools (APS) this week. Please use it as a guide as you develop your coverage plans. Members of the media are invited to attend all events on the Weekly APS News Tip Sheet.

(Thursday, August 1 | 5 - 7 AM) Day One of the 2024-2025 School Year to Begin at Lakewood Bus Depot for Interim Superintendent Dr. Battle, Incoming Superintendent Dr. Johnson

 

Day One of the new school year is here for Atlanta Public Schools!

 

Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle and incoming Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson will begin the day at the district’s Lakewood Bus Depot, adjacent to Lakewood Stadium at 70 Clair Drive, SW. 

Media is invited to do live shots from the bus depot, beginning at 5 a.m. Additionally, Drs. Battle and Johnson will meet, greet, and serve breakfast to bus drivers – who are always the first faces students see to begin their day – at the location. 

 

They will be available for interviews (taped or live shots) from 6:30 - 7 a.m., before they begin their tour of schools for the day. 

 

WHAT:       Day One of the 2024-25 school year will begin at the Lakewood Bus Depot for interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle and incoming Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson.

(Thursday, August 1 | 7 AM) APS Welcomes Students Back for the 2024-2025 School Year

 

It’s Day One for the 2024-2025 school year for Atlanta Public Schools’ 50,000 students and 6,000 teachers! 

 

Media may do stand-up reports from in front of the following schools:

 

  • Barack and Michelle Obama Academy (970 Martin Street, SE), which continued making gains on the recently released Georgia Milestones.
  • Virginia-Highland Elementary School (774 Virginia Avenue, NE), one of more than a half dozen school buildings with newly constructed security vestibules, part of an effort to outfit every school in the district. 
  • Booker T. Washington High School (45 Whitehouse Drive, SW), established as the state’s first high school for African American students, which is celebrating its centennial anniversary this school year. 

 

(Note: Students may only be shown below the waist or from behind, as media release forms will not be completed. However, if a student is accompanied by a parent/guardian, permission may be obtained directly from them.)

 

 

 

(Thursday, August 1 | 10:45 - 11:30 AM) Interim Superintendent Dr. Battle, Incoming Superintendent Dr. Johnson Tour Sylvan Middle School

 

Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle and incoming Superintendent Dr. Bryan Johnson will continue their tour of schools on Day One with a visit to Sylvan Middle School (1461 Sylvan Road, SW).

They will make brief remarks and answer questions from assembled media prior to touring the school, where media may accompany them as they interact with school administrators and staff.
