Statement on Academic Recovery Plan and Bell Schedule Change
In implementing the district’s Academic Recovery Plan and after evaluating various options, Atlanta Public Schools (APS) has altered the school bell schedule, which will begin in the 2021-2022 school year, as follows:
- Elementary School 7:45 am to 2:45 pm (changed from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.)
- High School 8:45 am to 3:45 pm (changed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.)
- Middle School 9:15 am to 4:15 pm (changed from 9:05 a.m. to 4:05 p.m.)
In reaching this decision, APS engaged with GO Teams, parents of students with disabilities, APS staff, various advisories and task forces, the district’s internal Equity Design Team, school principals, and the broader APS community through a virtual town hall and survey. Click here to see the survey results. The survey results and other feedback from the community were one factor in making this decision, but not the final driver of the decision.
This district’s comprehensive Academic Recovery Plan includes:
- A new K-12 universal screener to help identify students’ learning needs.
- Summer Academic Recovery Academy, which has enrolled over 11,000 students districtwide.
- Implementation of a required intervention or enrichment block in all schools.
