Frequently Asked Questions
-
- Why is it called Everybody's Playground? Our playground is intentionally designed to serve all of our students at Virginia-Highland Elementary and in the greater community. It will have elements that will appeal to Kindergartners, 5th graders, and every grade in between. It will also be Atlanta's first inclusive playground, meaning all the equipment will be able to be accessed by handicapped children. Another important element of this playground is that it will be open to the public on weekends and during the summer. These elements together are why we feel "Everybody's Playground" is the perfect name for our new playground.
- Will my child enjoy the playground if they are not handicapped? Absolutely! Most of the elements that make a playground inclusive are subtle (such as ramp entries instead of stairs). The ride-along elements have features to allow students with wheelchairs to click in and ride them, but can be ridden as expected when no one with a wheelchair is present. Sensory elements (such as musical instruments) are designed to be enjoyed by everyone.
- What is the ideal age for this playground? The playground is designed for children aged 5-12. We have made sure there are aspects that will appeal to both our youngest and oldest students.
- Will the playground be open to the community? Can I host my child's birthday party at the playground? YES! The playground will be open to the community on weekends and in the summers. We would love for you to host your child's birthday party at the playground, just as you can at any other public playground.

- When do you expect the project to be completed? For the latest updates, please see the timeline section of the website.
- Will there be a soccer field installed on the lower field? Yes, the existing playground equipment will be relocated and the entire area will be re-sodded so it can be used as a recreational sports field.
