In 1973, King Middle School became one of the first schools in the nation to be named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In keeping with the values of Dr. King, King Middle strives to prepare students for a globally competitive environment while fostering the principles of responsibility, service, respect, compassion, and international mindedness with a challenging academic framework. As part of the IB curriculum, students have a selection of:
- Connections (two per semester) include Art, Band, Dance, Chorus, Orchestra, Theater, Health, PE, Swimming, and Career and Technology Education (CATE).
- Spanish or Chinese (everyday core classes beginning in the 2018-2019 year).
- Academic clubs such as Student Government, and Debate
- Growing fine arts department, including a Dance Troupe, Theater Troupe, Band, Chorus and Orchestra.
- Competitive sports teams include Football, Boys and Girls Basketball, Softball, Baseball, Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Track and Field, and Cheerleading.
- Non-competitive sports such as Cycling, Kickball, and Swimming.
- Mentorship programs with community partners like Emory University, Atlanta University Center, Georgia State University, and community volunteers.
King Middle has track and field facilities, baseball/ softball field facilities, and an upgraded Olympic-sized swimming pool.
