    August 6, 2018

Welcome parents and students to the Gifted/Talent Development Program!  I am Mrs. Gaither and I will provide Gifted and Talented and Talent Development instruction beginning the week of August 6, 2018.  Our theme this year is Connecting to Our World and Beyond.

The first unit for 1st – 2nd graders is My Big Back Yard. Students will explore how living things are interconnected.  The study will begin with the living things in their own “backyard.”  It will continue to Georgia as our backyard as we explore living things native to Georgia and how the Cherokee and Creek were connected to the environment. Finally, students will study why it is important to care for our environment and a key historical figure (John Muir) who has worked to protect it.

The World’s Greatest Travel Agent is the first unit for 3rd-5th graders. This unit is designed to help students appreciate the geography and culture around the United States and to help students understand how all of the subjects are integrated to help run a successful travel business.  In these lessons, the students will use data retrieval charts and graphic organizers, take notes, record information in journals, make advertising brochures, write itineraries, create budgets, and share information learned through research projects and persuasive writing.  The students will plan a dream vacation for a client.

All students will attend class one day a week, where the focus is on standards-based differentiated lessons and activities that promote advanced communication skills, advanced research skills, creative thinking and problem solving skills, and higher order critical thinking skills. Units of study are aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence as well as the Atlanta Public School’s Gifted and Talented Program Standards. STEAM activities and projects, as well as, activities that support the social and emotional needs of all children are ongoing throughout the school year.

All students should come prepared on their Challenge day with 1) pencils and 2) a marbled cover composition book for journaling.  Students are expected to complete all homework assignments, mini projects, and end of the unit performance tasks. Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
