August 12, 2019
Welcome parents and students to the Gifted/Talent Development Program!
I am Mrs. Gaither and I am excited to provide Gifted and Talent Development instruction beginning the week of August 19, 2019. Our classroom theme this year is “Soaring to New Heights.”
The first unit for 1st – 2nd graders is Ocean Commotion. Through research based strategies, students will engage in a higher order critical thinking unit to discover the basics of our world’s five major oceans using creative and innovative approaches.
The Science behind Forensic Science is the first unit for 3rd-5th graders. Students will rely on their power of observation and deduction as forensic scientists to solve real world crimes that even baffle the authorities. Students will work diligently to provide the crucial pieces of evidence and use science to figure out how to solve crimes.
All students will attend class one day a week, where the focus is on standards-based differentiated lessons and activities that promote the Atlanta Public School’s Gifted and Talented Program Standards: Advanced Communication Skills, Creativity, Creative Problem Solving, Global Citizenship, Higher Order Thinking Skills,
Leadership, Advanced Research Skills, and Social Emotional Learning. Units of study are aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence. Collaboration through STEAM engineering design challenges, projects, and various activities will support the social and emotional needs of all children throughout the school year.
Students should come prepared on their Challenge day with 1) composition notebook and 2) pencils. Students are expected to complete any homework assignments, mini projects, and the end of the unit performance task.
Please contact me with any questions or concerns.
