Helen Ruffin Reading BowlAre you in 4th or 5th grade? Are you a voracious Reader?Do you excel at games like Jeopardy?Do you love competition?.....then Reading Bowl is for you!The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl ("HRRB") is a unique reading competition offered to 4th and 5th graders at Brandon. The competition was created by Helen Ruffin, a media specialist in Dekalb County. She served on the selection committee for the Georgia Children’s Book Award nominee program. This literature program began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education. The program inspired her to use the nominee books to encourage her students to read. The "bowl" is a competition between schools and uses questions from the Georgia Book Award nominees in a quiz bowl-like format. There are 4 competitions: District, Regionals, Divisionals and State. At each round, the top 2 schools move on in a single elimination process. This will be Brandon's 10th year competing in the HRRB. We have placed in the District round 5 times, where we competed against other APS schools, and moved onto the Regionals at Clayton State University. During our 2014-2015 season, we placed 2nd at Regionals and moved on to Divisionals at Lovingood Middle School in Cobb County. Brandon was the first APS school to ever make it that far! We placed 3rd at Divisionals and couldn't have been prouder. The team is sponsored by Ms. Waddell, Ms. Brown (4th grade teacher) and Mrs. Ingram (PC Media Specialist). Official HRRB rules state that only 10 students can be on the team. We select the 'top ten' readers out of those interested based on the following criteria:
- Amount of books read
- AR Quiz Score
- 10 Questions/Answers turned in for each book read so we can quiz each other
- Attendance
