What should my 2nd grader learn this year?

Georgia Performance Standards: (GPS) This is our core academic curriculum created by the state Department of Education.  You may go to their website to see the complete list of second grade standards.  www.georgiastandards.org

Everyday Math:  This math program is based on the University of Chicago mathematics initiative.  It is a spiraling mathematics program in grades K-5 at Morris Brandon.  Children revisit and build upon skills and concepts learned from first grade and throughout the year in second grade.  It includes hands-on activities for counting, numeration, measurement, geometry patterns, sorting, data calculation, and beginning addition and subtraction.

Reading/Language Arts/Spelling:  These areas are all taught together and are building blocks for one another.  There are various hands-on activities and games that we use to teach letter sounds, decoding, and spelling to help students become better readers.  Students are assessed to produce appropriate reading levels for individualized reading instruction.  All of these programs work together to educate all levels of learners.

Accelerated Reader (AR):  Accelerated Reader is a supplemental reading program we utilize at Brandon.  AR is a mandatory part of Mrs. Ingram’s class. Each student will have an individualized goal created by their teacher.  As students earn points, they will be recognized in point categories on our AR WALL OF FAME!  We use AR as a motivator to get kids excited about reading!!!  Please help your child become a better reader by reading & listening to them read their AR books every night.

International Baccalaureate (IB):  IB helps our students to make connections between themselves and the world around them, while becoming inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people.  We conduct 6 cross-curricular units of study following the IB guidelines. These units are:

    1. The Circle of Life – focus on plant and animal needs, habitats, life cycles, humans effect on them
    2. Once Upon a Time – focus on historical figures, past and present life, and personal contributions
    3. A Whole New World – regions of GA, map skills, comparison of cultures around the world
    4. Meet the Folks – folklore, cultural diversity, fairy tales
    5. From Trash to Treasure – types of matter, changes in matter, environmental responsibility
    6. It’s Off to Work We Go – goods and services, producers and consumers, consumer choices, economy

EIP (Early Intervention Program):  The EIP program at Brandon is designed to provide EXTRA reading and math support in the areas of need for individual students or groups of students with the same need.

    ASSESSMENTS

Report Cards:  Report cards go home October 14th, January 10th, March 16th, and June 1th. The report card will grade students on the numerical grading scale:  A (90 and above), B (80-89), C (70-79), F (below 70).  This grading scale was created by APS.  Students will be graded on individual tests, quizzes, reports, class work, and assignments designated by the individual classroom teacher.  Teachers will also give a grade for conduct:  E (excellent), S(satisfactory), N(needs improvement), or U (unacceptable).

STAR test:  The STAR test is a reading assessment we use at Brandon to determine reading levels in a grade equivalency format.

Rocket Math:  This program helps your child learn his or her addition and subtraction fact.  There are tests of 50 problems that will be timed for 3 minutes.  Rocket Math will begin in Unit 2.

Spelling Test:  Spelling tests will be given every Friday on the Phonics skill of the week.

Weekly Reading Assessments: Each week students will read a story and focus on specific reading comprehension skills.

Everyday Math Assessments: After each Math Unit, students will be given a unit assessment.  They will complete a review sheet the day before in class to take home and study.

Social Studies and Science: Throughout most units, students will be assessed through school and home projects.  If there is not a project for the unit, there will be a paper assessment.
