M. Agnes Jones Elementary School (MAJ) is named for Mary Agnes Boswell Jones who was the first African-American Superintendent in the Atlanta Public School System and the first female president of the Georgia Teachers and Education Association (GTEA). More well known as M. Agnes Jones, she was born in Eatonton, Georgia to John and Ellen Boswell. She married Dr. Alfred D. Jones who preceded her in death.

M. Agnes Jones was the first and only woman president of the Atlanta Tuberculosis Association (1934-1935) colored branch and the first in the Atlanta Public School System to receive a Master of Arts degree in Education. M. Agnes was affectionally known by nieces and nephews as "Auntie Babe" because of her enthusiasm for life and education.

Since opening its doors in 1963, M. Agnes Jones Elementary is still making history as it is the first Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) STEM Certified school in the Atlanta Public Schools system (APS) as well as the first traditional GADOE STEAM and COGNIA STEM Certified in APS! Currently, M. Agnes Jones Elementary School is the only school in the entire state of Georgia that holds all three certifications. 

MAJ offers a core content curriculum (i.e. ELA, Math, Science, Social Studies, etc.) along with other STEM/STEAM enrichment opportunities for students. The school-wide initiative at MAJ is "We are the world, conquering hunger through sustainability and creativity!" While Environmental Science is the signature program at MAJ, students engage daily in Technology Innovations and Engineering Applications.

MAJ students are engaged in daily rigorous STEM & STEAM instruction and are exposed to innovative STEAM careers. MAJ provides learning experiences and opportunities where all students receive a strong academic foundation, while being challenged to think critically, solve problems, and engage in creativity through the Arts, while working together collaboratively for the good of their school and community. The standards-driven lessons and accompanying projects that take place in each lab prepare students for college and career readiness. Each morning, along with a positive affirmation, students are reminded that they are "Born for greatness, Second to none!
