         The Confucius Institute in Atlanta is a private-public-international partnership among Emory University, Atlanta Public Schools (APS), and Nanjing University, China, with the sponsorship of the Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) and the Confucius Institute Headquarters in China.

     
         The Institute is a gateway to Chinese language and culture for individuals, families, communities and schools in metro Atlanta and the surrounding area. Its mission is to promote understanding of Chinese language and culture through training courses, conferences, cultural workshops, and events. The Institute will help introduce K-12 instruction in Modern Standard Chinese in APS and throughout the state of Georgia. Building on extensive resources for Chinese Studies at Emory University and pooling together China specialists in universities in the Atlanta area, the Institute will serve as a regional center for Chinese teacher training and Chinese instruction and curriculum development. The Institute will also provide a wide range of public programming, such as language and cultural workshops, to address the diverse needs of the business community and the general public. A comprehensive information center, the Institute will help create connections and partnerships between the Atlanta community and China.
     
         Fred A. Toomer Elementary School's Kindergarten Chinese Language students, our dance team, and student greeters from various grade levels participated in the opening ceremony of the Confucius Institute in March of 2008.
