• Mathematics Instruction at Harper-Archer

Harper-Archer Elementary uses the Mathematics Standards Based Classroom Instructional Framework from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) which incorporates the Instructional Learning Plans as the Mathematics Core Curriculum. The Instructional Framework embeds four components: Engage, Explore, Apply, and Reflect. These four components are used daily by teachers to engage students in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving using real-word application.

Components of the Mathematics Standards Based Classroom Instructional Framework:

Engage: Teachers facilitate an interesting and captivating introduction to the lesson. Scholars notice patterns or connections from previously explored topics and ask questions and express wonder about the concepts being presented. The goal of this component is for the teacher to provide scholars with an easy entry point into mathematics that will provide the catalyst for future learning.

Explore: This is where scholars are engaged in critical thinking and strategic thinking as they explore new mathematical concepts. Scholars also make connections and explore patterns using various tools and representations. Teachers offer support and assistance as needed during the exploration process.

Apply: Scholars take what they have learned from the exploration focus and apply the learned concepts to real world, situations, by themselves or in collaborative groups. Scholars also connect and generalize patterns to a broader situation. Within the Apply focus of the lesson, scholars are also engaged in small group instruction that addresses their needs based on their instructional levels.

Reflect: Teachers use purposeful questioning to prompt scholars to communicate efforts by summarizing the learning and engaging in reflection. Scholars contribute to group discussions or individual reflections and pose questions to solidify understanding.
