• The ESOL program of Atlanta Public Schools is committed to meeting the needs of English Learners (ELs) and their families. ESOL is a federally-mandated instructional program for eligible students in grade K - 12 (Georgia School Law Code 1981, 20-2-156, 1985).

     
     
    The APS ESOL program is standards-based program emphasizing academic and social language development. ESOL coursework is based upon WIDA Consortium English Language Development Standards while simultaneously integrating grade appropriate content standards to ensure that all ELs are successful. The ESOL program also provides access to resources and facilitates communication between the school district and home to allow parents and families of English Learners to play an active role in their child’s education.

     

    SAHS ESOL Mission Statement:

    To create supportive learning environments which value and build on students' academic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. To achieve this, our aim is to employ the best instructional practices among students, teachers, parents, and the community.

     

    SAHS ESOL Goals:

    • To work in collaboration with classroom and other special program teachers in order to support the acquisition of language, social, and content skills.
    • To provide opportunities for students to highlight their intellectual and physical abilities.
    • To provide opportunities for parents and the community to be involved in SAHS programs and activities.

    My Mission with Teaching ESOL

    • to build trust in the student so he can gain confidence in himself and the language
    • to patiently guide the student in increasing his comprehension, vocabulary and verbal skills
    • to help the student feel comfortable with the language
    • to help open their creativity
    • to make a noticeable improvement with their pronunciation and diction
    • to encourage the habit of daily practice and increase
    • Teach lessons that are culturally responsive.
    • Develop a positive environment where students are safe to take risks as learners.
