    Ways to Participate

The Sarah Smith PTO undertakes dozens of initiatives each year, so you're likely to find a volunteer position that suits your availability, interests and expertise. Figuring out how it all fits together, however, can be a bit confusing.

At Sarah Smith, you can volunteer at any of the following:

The Sarah Smith PTO Board works directly with school administration to ensure the PTO's goals align with the school's needs; it also sets and manages the PTO budget. The co-presidents and vice-presidents oversee the PTO Committees. Nominations for vacancies on the executive board are submitted to the Nominating Committee in the Winter; the executive board slate is officially voted on at the Spring PTO meeting.

If you know someone you'd like to nominate for a position on the PTO Board (or if you would like to nominate yourself), complete the Nomination form when it becomes available and return it as per the instructions on the form.

Committee Chairs coordinate, plan and manage the budgets for their respective initiatives, which can range from one-time events, like Bingo Night, to large school-wide undertakings, such as Read-a-Thon or International Travelers Week. To serve as a committee chair in the next school year, please email sarahsmithpto@gmail.com to express your interest.

Committee Members work with the Committee Chairs to get the work done for their events. Sign up to serve on the PTO HUB.

Classroom volunteers focus their energies on communicating, organizing and working with their classroom teacher and fellow parents on PTO-related initiatives. Some classroom volunteer opportunities include Room Parent, Read-a-Thon class rep , yearbook photographer and teacher’s helper. Your room parents will advise you on volunteer opportunities in the classroom and how to sign up.

    Volunteer Background Check Requirement

Atlanta Public Schools requires that all non-district personnel who will have contact with children undergo a criminal background check. The majority of PTO-related volunteer opportunities are classified as Level 2 volunteers.

Please review the district’s volunteer policies and complete the associated form and paperwork.
