Sarah Canavan is a passionate and experienced educator who thrives on the energy of the classroom and the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with her students. While originally from Sarasota, FL, Sarah considers New York City her home. She completed her undergraduate studies at The College of New Rochelle, earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology/Chemistry. She furthered her education at the City College of New York, where she obtained a Master's degree in Teaching, with a focus on Secondary Science.

Sarah's teaching journey began in 2006, and she has taught a range of grade levels and subjects throughout her career. She has taught 6th-8th-grade Science, as well as 3rd-grade Math/Science and 5th-grade Math/Science. Sarah finds immense fulfillment in building relationships with her students and guiding them to reach their full potential. Witnessing the growth, motivation, and inspiration of her students is what fuels her passion for teaching and keeps her coming back year after year.

Joining the SPARK community has been a transformative experience for Sarah. She is amazed by the unique energy, love, and support that permeate every aspect of the SPARK family, from the bus drivers to the administration. The inclusive and nurturing environment at SPARK ensures that every student feels seen, valued, and appreciated on a daily basis.

Beyond her teaching role, Sarah cherishes spending quality time with her family and their wonderful neighbors. Whether it's gathering in someone's front yard to share food and laughter or embarking on adventures while biking the Beltline, they find joy in each other's company. Traveling is also a shared passion for Sarah and her family, as they have been fortunate to embark on amazing trips together, creating lasting memories.

During the years between her teaching roles in New York City and joining the SPARK family, Sarah dedicated her time to helping write problem-based math curriculum. This experience allowed her to gain valuable insights into math learning from a student perspective and further enhanced her teaching of mathematics, adding depth and practicality to her instructional approach.

Sarah's enthusiasm for building relationships, her dedication to student growth, and her deep appreciation for the SPARK community make her an invaluable member of the teaching profession. Her ability to unlock motivation and inspiration in her students, combined with her warm and supportive nature, creates a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
