• The General Automotive pathway basic skills needed to gain employment as an entry level automotive technician. Students will be exposed to courses in automotive preventative maintenance, brakes, steering and suspension, electrical systems, engine repair, engine performance, automatic transmission, manual transmission and differential & automotive HVAC.

    Salary ranges can vary widely depending on many important factors, including education, certifications, additional skills, training, and years of experience in your profession.

     

    Automotive General Service Technician/Mechanic- Maintenance (Entry Level)

    0-2 years of experience to start.  $8-$17 per hour

    Maintains the Tire Lube Express (TLE) area by company policies and procedures by properly handling claims and returns, zoning the area, arranging, and organizing merchandise/supplies, identifying shrink and damages, and ensuring a safe work environment. Build confidence, experience, and skills as an automotive mechanic across a wide range of domestic and foreign vehicles. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities. Reports machinery or equipment defects or malfunctions to supervisor.

     

    Automotive Service Technician I $30-$51K, average $39K

    Alternate job titles: Automotive Service Technician / Mechanic I | Entry Automotive Mechanic

    Typically requires 1-3 years of related experience or may need 0 years of experience with additional specialized training and/or certifications. Performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Test drives and diagnoses undercar issues, including Suspension, Steering, Driveline and Differentials issues. Performs line technician services, routine inspections/maintenance, system diagnostics, and full automotive troubleshooting and testing. Provides miscellaneous mechanic works, including but not limited to body work, diagnosing, disassembling, and assembling components and engines. Performs all duties according to safety procedures.     Typically requires 3-5 years of related experience or may have 2 years of experience with certifications and training.

    Performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Test drives and diagnoses undercar issues, including Suspension, Steering, Driveline and Differentials issues. Performs line technician services, routine inspections/maintenance, system diagnostics, and full automotive troubleshooting and testing. Provides miscellaneous mechanic works, including but not limited to body work, diagnosing, disassembling, and assembling components and engines. Performs all duties according to safety procedures. Typically requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. Has gained proficiency in multiple competencies relevant to the job. Works independently within established procedures associated with the specific job function. Reports machinery or equipment defects or malfunctions to supervisor.

     

    Automotive Service Technician III  $45K-$100K+

    Alternate job titles: Automotive Service Technician / Mechanic III | Senior Automotive Mechanic

    Typically requires 5-7 years of related experience

    Performs maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light trucks. Test drives and diagnoses undercar issues, including Suspension, Steering, Driveline and Differentials issues. Performs line technician services, routine inspections/maintenance, system diagnostics, and full automotive troubleshooting and testing.  Provides miscellaneous mechanic works, including but not limited to body work, diagnosing, disassembling, and assembling components and engines. Performs all duties according to safety procedures. Typically requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor. Has gained full proficiency in a broad range of activities related to the job. Independently performs a wide range of complex duties under general guidance from supervisors.     Automotive Shop Foreman  $45K-$75K

    Orders via fax, Service Department supplies by Friday. Organize assignments to meet work requirements. Participates in the repair and reconditioning of automobiles and trucks. Assists technicians in vehicle troubleshooting and diagnostics, often serves as a mentor to general service or line technicians. Reports machinery or equipment defects or malfunctions to supervisor.

     

    Service Writer $30-$90k average $50K, some over $100K  

    Alternate job titles: Customer Service Work Order Coordinator | Service Resource and Scheduling Specialist | Service Work Order Writer

    Schedules repairs with customers and prepares schedule for shop and field service personnel. Oversees timely processing of work orders. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Typically requires 1-3 years of related experience. May be entry level if some experience in the skill. Gains or has attained full proficiency in a specific area of discipline. Works under moderate supervision. Develop an estimated cost in full detail for the customer but always following up with them when a finalized cost is made. Assist in managing the service staff to maintain productivity and profitability of service operations. Makes certain that time ticket information is complete and communicates with customer.

     

    Automotive Service Manager $50-$77k, average $61,500

    Assures proper repair order flow to satisfy warranty/dealership/business office requirements. Observe, encourage, and inspire advisors to secure customer loyalty. Understand and keep abreast of federal, state, & local regulations that affect safety/operations and complies with these regulations including hazardous waste disposal & OSHA Right-to-Know.

     

    Automotive Commercial/Fleet Services Manager  $35K-$75 average $58K

    The Commercial Automotive Services Manager assigns jobs within the service center and dispatches road and fleet service according to customer requests or established requirements. Manages the service staff to effectively meet customer requirements and minimize service-related expenses. Being a Commercial Automotive Services Manager trains service technician and conducts new hire orientation; schedules other training as required. Makes recommendations for hiring, firing, and disciplining of service techs. In addition, Commercial Automotive Services Manager ensures that company policies are being followed by technicians.  Also manages workflow and productivity.

    Automotive Detailer $26K-$35K average

    The Automotive Cleaner may require a high school diploma or its equivalent and 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Cleans interiors and exteriors of transportation vehicles such as airplanes, automobiles, buses, railroad cars, and streetcars. Being an Automotive Cleaner relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. In addition, Automotive Cleaner performs a variety of tasks. Works under general supervision; typically reports to a supervisor or manager.

     

    Painter, Automotive/Body Shop Tech. Range $26,000K-$80,000K

    Cleans and prepares surface of articles to be painted using solvent, sandpaper, and wire brush. Understand and follow all state and federal regulations, such as those governing the disposal of hazardous wastes. select and mix coating liquid to produce desired color, according to specifications for consistency and hue using a paddle or mechanical mixer.

     

    Automotive Glass Installer/Repairer $35K-$75K, average $54K

    Alternate job titles: Auto Glass Repair Technician | Automotive Glass Technician | Windshield Repair Technician

    Checks, installs, and repairs damaged glass parts of vehicles. Requires a high school diploma or its equivalent. May be required to be licensed or to complete an apprenticeship in an area of specialty. Requires 0-2 years of experience in the field or in a related area. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor.

     

    Automotive Designer/Field Service Engineer $60K-$80K starting and up to $180K

    Provides support for attaining agreements regarding design details within customer/supplier. Active participation in Development Team Meetings represents design conformance according to customer procedures / standards. Understanding of how to adapt creative across platforms (print, email, web). Typically requires 5-10 years of Automotive repair industry experience, Senior Master Tech Level with a manufacturer and ASE Master Certification, plus a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineer field.
