ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
At Booker T. Washington High School, we are committed to fostering an environment where students love to learn, educators inspire, families engage, and the community trusts the system.
Named for the renowned educator, Booker T. Washington High School opened in September 1924 under the leadership of the late Charles Lincoln Harper, its first principal, and the Atlanta Board of Education. It holds the distinction of being the first public high school for African Americans in both the state of Georgia and the Atlanta Public Schools system.
The school building is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1927, an exact replica of the Booker T. Washington monument at Tuskegee University was erected at the school’s entrance. This statue, Booker T. Washington Lifting the Veil of Ignorance by sculptor Charles Keck, bears the inscription:
"He lifted the veil of ignorance from his people and pointed the way to progress through education and industry."
Booker T. Washington (1856–1915) was an influential educator, author, and orator who rose from slavery to become one of the most powerful Black leaders of his time.
Born in Virginia, he worked his way through school and later became the first leader of Tuskegee Institute, where he emphasized education, hard work, and self-reliance. His 1895 Atlanta Address brought him national recognition, and his autobiography Up from Slavery (1901) became a classic.
Washington advised U.S. presidents, founded the National Negro Business League, and led what became known as the Age of Booker T. Washington. Though criticized for accommodating segregation, he also quietly supported challenges to racial injustice. His legacy remains a blend of pragmatism, leadership, and dedication to progress through education and economic empowerment.
