As part of Atlanta Public Schools’ mission to create a caring and collaborative culture where employees have the opportunity to offer meaningful support to one another during difficult times, we are proud to announce the creation of the Atlanta Public Schools Time Share Sick Leave Bank – APS Time Share Bank.
The APS Time Share Bank allows you to donate sick leave to a community pool where you and your fellow employees can request additional sick leave in case of a catastrophic illness or injury when all existing leave has been depleted.If you have any questions, please email LeaveRequests@atlanta.k12.ga.us.
Time Share Sick Leave Bank FAQs

1. How would I qualify for enrollment with the sick leave bank?
You must be an active full-time employee for one year and have a minimum of seven days available in your sick leave accrual balance.

2. If I joined the Sick Leave Bank in the past years, am I considered a member?
Yes, if you contributed sick leave days during the past years, your membership is active.

3. Do I have to be a member of the Sick Leave Bank to request a withdrawal?
Yes, you must be a member to request a withdrawal.

4. How many days am I eligible to receive in a withdrawal?
A maximum of 30 days can be withdrawn in a year. A lifetime maximum of 60 days can be withdrawn from the leave share.

5. Will my shared unused days be credited back to me at retirement?
Any unused shared sick leave will be forfeited to the shared leave bank.

6. Is a Sick Leave Bank employee required to donate hours every year to maintain membership?
No, an initial contribution is required to become a member. Additional contributions will be communicated if the pool is considered depleted, in which an additional mandatory 2-day contribution is required from all participants to continue membership.

7. Can I change my mind after I have donated?
No, your leave hour contributions are irrevocable.

8. Can I withdraw from the bank before I apply to receive short term or long-term disability?
Yes, withdrawal requests can be submitted once all available (sick, personal, or annual) leave is exhausted, your enrollment in the sick leave bank is current, and you meet the health qualifications.

9. What is the benefit of this program to an employee who has a significant amount of accrued sick leave?
The benefit of this program is in the opportunity to donate hours to colleagues who are suffering from a severe illness/injury. No one can predict when we might find ourselves suffering a catastrophic illness or injury.

10. Do I have to be a member of the Sick Leave Bank to donate leave to a specific colleague?
Yes, membership is required if you want to donate to a specific colleague. The recipient receiving the donated hours must be a member. A maximum of 10 days can be donated to an employee.

11. Can a former employee who has left hours in their sick leave balance donate to another employee?
No, transactions involving donated hours must be between full-time, active employees.
