• All APS employees are covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act. In order to be eligible for FML, the
employee must have worked at least 12 months with APS (full- or part-time capacity). This means it is
possible for your newly hired teachers to be eligible for FML if they were a substitute or hourly
employee before becoming a full-time employee.

The employee has to work at least 1,250 hours in the 12 months immediately preceding the need for
leave, and have a serious health condition or need to care for an immediate family member (spouse,
parents or minor children. In-laws are excluded).

Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks (60 days) of job-protected leave for the serious health
condition. The leave may be taken in a continuous block (weeks at a time), or intermittent (leave taken
as needed for appointments or episodic flare-ups).
