At Virginia-Highland Elementary, we Foster Inclusion for Every Child!
At VHE, we are committed to creating a warm and welcoming environment where every child feels valued, respected, and included. We believe that diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and we work diligently to ensure that every student, regardless of their background or abilities, has an equal opportunity to thrive and learn. Here are some of the inclusive practices we use to achieve this goal:
1. Diverse and Inclusive Curriculum:
- We have a curriculum that reflects the diverse cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds of our students.
- We incorporate diverse literature, historical perspectives, and art into our lessons to ensure that students see themselves and their experiences represented in their education.
2. Differentiated Instruction & Professional Development:
- Our educators recognize that every child is unique and may have different learning needs. They employ differentiated instruction strategies to tailor lessons to individual students' abilities and learning styles.
- Our staff participates in ongoing professional development to enhance their cultural competency and inclusive teaching skills, which includes learning about culturally relevant teaching practices.
3. Inclusive Classroom Environments:
- We create inclusive classrooms where every child feels safe, respected, and welcome. This includes the use of inclusive language, the promotion of empathy and understanding, and the incorporation of culturally relevant practices that reflect the backgrounds of our students.
- We have two sensory rooms at VHE - these are dedicated, controlled spaces within our school that are equipped with various sensory tools and equipment. These rooms are designed to be safe, calm, and comfortable environments where students can engage with a wide range of sensory experiences - including sensory lighting, soft furnishings, visual and tactile elements, and calming tools.
4. Special Education Services, Accessiblity, and Accommodations:
- We are dedicated to meeting the needs of students on a diverse spectrum. Our Special Education Department provides a range of services tailored to students with exceptionalities, such as autism, learning disabilities, mobility differences, and more.
- Our team of experienced professionals works closely with teachers, parents, and students to create Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and Section 504 Plans to ensure that each student receives the support they need to succeed.
- We make our school facilities accessible for all and provide accommodations to students with disabilities, ensuring that no child is left behind.
5. Anti-Bias Training & Inclusive Language/Communication:
- Our staff receives regular anti-bias training to increase their awareness and ability to address issues related to bias, discrimination, and social justice in the classroom. This training ensures that our educators are well-equipped to foster an inclusive and equitable environment.
- We use inclusive language that respects and affirms the identities of all students, whether related to gender, race, religion, or abilities. Culturally relevant practices are incorporated into our communications and classroom discussions.
6. Parent and Community Engagement & Celebrating Diversity:
- We believe that inclusivity extends beyond the classroom. We actively engage parents and the community to create a network of support for all students and to ensure that culturally relevant practices are integrated into our school culture.
- We celebrate the various cultures and traditions represented in our school through events, cultural fairs, and diversity-focused activities, fostering a sense of belonging among all students.
At VHE, we believe that by embracing diversity, practicing inclusivity, and providing specialized services for students on a diverse spectrum, we not only prepare our students for academic success but also for a future where they can be empathetic, respectful, and open-minded global citizens. We invite you to be a part of our inclusive community, where every child is valued and celebrated.
Join us in creating an environment where diversity is not only accepted but celebrated!
