- Why STEM?
-
STEM is ALL about Empowerment Through Access!
As a historically black high school we want to ensure that minority children have equal access to quality STEM resources, including technology, materials, and learning opportunities. Providing these resources helps bridge the gap and allows students to explore and excel in STEM fields.
Inclusive Curriculum
STEM education allows us to develop a curriculum that reflects the diversity of students' backgrounds and experiences. It also allows us to integrate culturally relevant examples and contributions of minority scientists and engineers that can inspire students and make STEM subjects more relatable.
Building Confidence and Competence
Our unique approach to STEM creates an encouraging environment where children feel confident in their abilities. Here at BTW they can celebrate their successes, provide positive reinforcement, and are offered internship and partnership opportunities that connect them with role models who share their background.
Skill Development
STEM focuses on developing both technical skills and critical thinking abilities ensuring that students are not only consumers of technology but also creators and innovators.
Community and Collaboration
STEM resolves community issues. Through curriculum nights and STEM showcases we engage families and communities in the learning process. Additionally, this also fosters a collaborative learning environment where students work together on projects, share ideas, and solve problems as a team. This approach builds a sense of belonging and reinforces the importance of diversity in problem-solving.
Career Pathways
At Washington High School we offer the following Career Technical pathways: Agriculture, Computer Science, Culinary Arts, Healthcare, and Workforce Readiness.
Exposure to STEM Careers
We use our STEM pathways to provide students with opportunities to learn about and explore STEM careers. Offer internships, job shadowing, and partnerships with local businesses and universities to give students a firsthand look at potential career paths.
Washington High Schools approach to STEM is based on bringing high-quality, 21st century education into all areas of the classroom. Our level of success as STEM educators and facilitators depends upon our willingness to work collaboratively among and across grade levels, stay current on effective tools and practices, and our ability to monitor and tailor our instruction to meet the needs of each student in our classrooms.
