CTAE DEPARTMENT: 

Here at D.M. Therrell High School our Career and Technical Education Department prepares our students to become College and Career Ready. We offer a range of programs that offer technical and occupational skills, to prepare students for post-secondary education and the workforce. We currently offer Audio and Video Technology Film, Business and Technology, Criminal and Law, Culinary Arts, and Health Science. We provide and give all students an opportunity to be a part of our Career-Related Program. 

Health Science Instructor and Hosa Advisor: Sherrie Sykes

The Healthcare Science Technology Education program is designed to provide students the opportunity to explore careers in healthcare. The course provides students with a smooth transition into post-secondary nursing, medical or allied health education or the ability to acquire an entry level medical position in the workforce or the military. Students are exposed to general healthcare knowledge and skills and are then encouraged to pursue a more in-depth study in the career area they are interested in through the appropriate career pathway.

Georgia HOSA​ is offered through the healthcare programs and is a co-curricular component that compliments the classroom experience along with Work-based learning opportunities. HOSA is a global student-led organization. HOSA’s mission is to empower HOSA-Future Health Professionals to become leaders in the global health community, through education, collaboration, and experience. HOSA actively promotes career opportunities in the health industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people.

Business and Technology Instructor and FBLA Advisor: Latreesha Jefferson 

The Business and Technology course is designed for high school students and provides an overview of business and technology skills required for today's business environment. Knowledge of business principles, the impact of financial decisions, and technology proficiencies demanded by business combine to establish the elements of business and technology. Students will learn essentials for working in a business environment, managing a business, and owning a business. The intention of this course is to prepare students to be successful both personally and professionally in an information-based society. Business and Technology is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills to be an asset to the collaborative, global, and innovative business world of today and tomorrow.

FBLA High School is the high school division of Future Business Leaders of America, Inc. FBLA helps high school students prepare for careers in business through academic competitions, leadership development, and educational programs.

By the end of FBLA High School experience, it is the goal that every member will:

• Develop an understanding of what it means to lead

• Understand fundamental business principles and how business impacts all sectors

• Demonstrate the ability to use technical skills to solve problems

• Create a post-graduation career plan

Audio Video Technology Film Instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor: 

Matthew Hazel 

Audio Video Technology Film course prepares students for employment or entry into a postsecondary education program in the audio and video technology career field. Topics covered may include, but are not limited to: terminology, safety, basic equipment, script writing, production teams, production and programming, lighting, recording and editing, studio production, and professional ethics. 

Skills USA, the Georgia Scholastic Press Association, Technology Student Association (TSA) and Student Television Network are examples of, but not limited to, appropriate organizations for providing leadership training and/or for reinforcing specific career and technical skills and may be considered an integral part of the instructional program.

Criminal and Law Instructor and SkillsUSA Advisor: Dr. Anthony Jackson  

This course examines the basic concepts of law related to citizens’ rights and the responsibilities, and students will receive instruction in critical skill areas including: communicating with diverse groups, conflict and resolution. Students will become immersed in criminal and constitutional law and will review basic law enforcement skills. The course ends with a mock trial to provide participants with a first-hand experience of the criminal justice system.

Culinary Arts and FCCLA Advisor: Chef Candace Davis 

 This course is designed to introduce students to fundamental food preparation terms, concepts, and methods in Culinary Arts where laboratory practice will parallel class work.  It creates a complete foundation and understanding of Culinary Arts leading to postsecondary education or a food-service career.

Mastery of standards through project-based learning, technical skills practice, and leadership development activities of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, (FCCLA) will provide students with a competitive edge for either entry into the education global marketplace and/or the post-secondary institution of their choice to continue their education and training.

Career Technical Instruction Coordinator Cierra Vickers

The Career Technical Education (CTI) program is designed to provide unique, meaningful leadership experiences for students in Georgia with disabilities as identified by the Division for Special Education Services and Support enrolled in secondary Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education courses and/or receiving CTI services. The CTI program empowers and equips students with disabilities through CTAE pathway course(s). As a part of the CTSO (Career Technical Instruction), you are eligible for assistance with staying on task with assignments, giving accommodations in the course as needed, and briefing your parents and instructor/case manager of performance monthly. With the CTI program, you are eligible for work-based activities/Field Trips, College Tours, Pre-Employment Services, and State Conferences where you will compete with other students across the state in CTAE.
