The following student opportunities are either supported by or offered through the APS Gifted and Talented Education Department. The local school gifted contact teacher will have information on these opportunities where offered.
The Academic Decathalon provides students of all learning levels the opportunity to excel academically through team competition and are tested in 10 categories: Art, Science, Economics, Essay, Interview, Language, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Social Science and Speech. A local APS competition qualifies the top school team for the state competition. There is also a later national competition.
Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) is a four-week summer residential instructional program designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. More than 2800 students from across the state interview and audition over three weekends in January and February, and from those nominees approximately 700 finalists are chosen to participate in the program. Since the program is fully funded by the Georgia General Assembly. Students are not charged any fees for this program if invited as a state finalist.

Middle School Academic Bowl involves preliminary local school bowls as well as an annual Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) state level bowl. APS may hold a local preliminary bowl. Top scoring teams from local and regional bowls move to the state bowl and compete against teams from all over the State of Georgia. Academic Bowl impacts students by creating good work/study habits, broadening one’s horizons of factual information, developing poise and confidence in students presenting themselves to the public, developing teamwork and good citizenship qualities, and instilling an appreciation for the pursuit of knowledge.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their relativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition at the local, state and world level. Thousands of teams throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.
Renzulli Learning is an interactive online system, found in selected APS schools, that provides students with a personalized learning environment, allowing teachers to easily differentiate instruction to increase engagement and achieve higher academic performance. Renzulli Learning has resources that promote and enable ALL students to pursue their interests, providing equity, innovation, and creativity for grades Pre-K through 12. Students are empowered by doing creative, imaginative projects that provide rigorous learning outcomes.STEAM Carnival is an annual APS day-long event in early spring for selected students in grades 3-5. The event, with a changing theme each year, provides multiple workshops for each participant and includes transportation from home schools. The hands-on workshops involve fun exposure to topics in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.The Stock Market Game™ connects students to the global economy through virtual investing and real-world learning. Through student-centric mobile apps, teachers have successfully used The Stock Market Game™ program to enliven core academic subjects — including Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts — research has shown that there is no better way to learn the importance of saving and investing.Summer Institute for the Gifted (SIG) has been a leader in gifted education since 1984. SIG provides summer academic enrichment programs for gifted, academically talented, creative, and high potential students in grades K-12, providing a diverse curriculum blended with creative and fun summer camp recreation. Students accomplish meaningful goals with other gifted students at prominent universities and schools nationwide, including Princeton University, Dartmouth College, and Yale University.
