Welcome to the Office of Literacy

The Office of Literacy is under the auspices of the the department of Curriculum and Instruction in the APS Office of Academics. Our goal is to ensure that all students receive high quality, standards-based literacy instruction in grades K-12 by teaching to and through the strengths of students. To this end, we endeavor to provide a balanced curriculum and responsive pedagogy that will prepare students academically and socially to meet the challenges of a global society.

The APS mission statement includes the charge to ensure that students are ready for both college and employment. In response to this charge, it is critical that our students, in grades PreK-12, sharpen their ability to read, write, speak, and listen. To that end, APS has developed a PreK-12 Literacy Plan, which articulates the District’s core beliefs about literacy, and provides its schools with a comprehensive and coherent roadmap for implementing high-quality literacy instruction in every classroom.
