Information for Parents
Is your child considering signing up for an internship? First, please review the General Information and Students pages. Here are answers to additional questions frequently asked by parents.
Will my child be supervised by an Atlanta Public Schools employee when off campus for their internship? No. Like college dual-enrollment and work-based learning programs, students sign out of school to participate in their internship.
How do I know my child will be safe? There are inherent risks to participation. Our program does several things to minimize those risks, but as noted above, direct supervision is not provided by an APS employee when off campus. Here are some of the ways we reduce risk:
- A representative of the APS Office of Gifted and Talented Education visits internship sites to inspect the working environment.
- Mentors complete orientation, including mandatory reporting training.
- Students are instructed in safety best practices.
- The classroom teacher checks in with students weekly to ensure their experiences have been positive.
- A representative of the APS Office of Gifted and Talented Education is on-call during internship hours to provide support as needed.
- All students, teachers, and mentors have the program coordinators' mobile phone numbers in case of an emergency.
How can I help my child be successful? Here are a few ways:
- In the fall, help your child arrange transportation to and from their internship from January - March.
- Help them coordinate extracurricular, sports, and family activities around their internship.
- Check in with your child regularly about their experiences.
You can find more helpful information on the General Information and Students pages. If you can't find the answer to your question, please get in touch with the Office of Gifted and Talented Education at 404-802-7532.
