3/17 Atlanta Public Schools Students Featured in Education Roundtable Documentary with President Barack Obama
ATLANTA – Antwarn Sanders and D’Ariel Myrick, seniors from Atlanta Public Schools’ (APS) historic Booker T. Washington High School, were featured in an education documentary taped March 9 with President Barack Obama. In the documentary, “A Roundtable with President Barack Obama: The Cost of Education,” the APS students join three students from Georgia Institute of Technology and Vice Media founder Shane Smith to discuss the challenges of paying for college, accumulating college debt, and enrolling in community college as an option for saving money towards their education.
ATLANTA – Atlanta Public Schools (APS) is accepting applications for General Administrative Transfers and Georgia Special Needs Scholarship transfers through Friday, Mar. 27. Georgia’s Public School Choice law allows residents of the city of Atlanta to attend a public school outside of their zoned APS school, if space is available. Students who live outside the district (non-residents) and want to attend an Atlanta Public School may do so, if space is available.
3/13 Riverdale Mayor Dr. Evelyn Wynn-Dixon featured speaker at 8th Annual Shirley Clarke Franklin Lecture Series
ATLANTA – The Honorable Dr. Evelyn Wynn-Dixon, mayor of the city of Riverdale, encouraged Coretta Scott King Young Women’s Leadership Academy (CSKYWLA) students to further their education and “take advantage of every opportunity” during her keynote address during the 8th Annual Shirley Clarke Franklin Lecture Series in Celebration of Women’s History held March 6.
3/12 APS Superintendent Dr. Meria J. Carstarphen receives inaugural Phoenix Award during Selma’s 50th Anniversary Jubilee Celebration
ATLANTA — Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent and Selma native, Dr. Meria J. Carstarphen, received the inaugural Phoenix Award from The Sullivan and Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson Foundation and Museum, Inc. March 8, in Selma, AL. The honor coincided with the Selma 50th Bridge Crossing Jubilee, an event that commemorates the 50th Anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the Selma-to-Montgomery March and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
3/12 Beecher Hills Elementary School PTA President Antwan McKee Receives 2015 Georgia Parent Leadership Award
ATLANTA – Beecher Hills Elementary School Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President Antwan McKee was one of six parents from across the state honored with the 2015 Georgia Parent Leadership Award from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) and the Georgia Parent Teacher Association (GA PTA). The parents were recognized at a ceremony during the 2015 Georgia PTA Day at the Capitol March 3.
