Frequently Asked Questions for families of students living in the Forest Cove Community for the start of the 2022-23 school year
Atlanta Public Schools (APS), Purpose Built Schools (PBSA), and our community partners are making sure every student affected by Forest Cove delays has a seat and the appropriate resources for a successful start to the school year on August 1. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions to assist families in gathering the information you may need.
-
If I have a K-12 student and live in the Forest Cove community, where will my student attend school on the first day of the school year?
Students are encouraged to return to the schools that they attended for the 2021-22 school year, with the exception of students from Thomasville Heights Elementary School (THES) who have been rezoned to attend Slater Elementary School. Students who attended Slater, Price Middle School, or Carver High School last school year may continue to attend those zoned schools. Rising 6th graders who attended THES or Slater last year as 5th graders should attend Price Middle School for this upcoming school year.
Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (PBSA), the organization that has operated Slater, Price, and Carver STEAM Academy for several years, will provide daily bus service to and from school for your student and will be following up with you soon with more details about the start of the school year. Students who attend Carver Early College will be provided daily bus service by APS.
If your student has been approved for a general administrative transfer to another APS school, your student may continue to attend that school through the highest grade level the school serves. If a move outside of the APS district occurs, the payment of non-resident tuition would be applicable beginning with the following semester. If you have any questions about your administrative transfer, please contact the APS Office of Student Assignment at studentassignment@apsk12.org or 404-802-2233.
If your student is enrolled in an APS charter school for this school year, your student may continue to attend that charter school so long as you remain living in APS. Please contact the charter school directly for more details.
-
What if my student attended Thomasville Heights Elementary School (THES) last school year?
Due to the redevelopment of Forest Cove Apartments, APS decided to temporarily close THES and rezone all students who remain in that attendance zone to Slater starting in SY22-23. If your rising 1st-5th grade student attended THES last school year, they are zoned for and may attend Slater. If you had a 5th grader at THES last year, they are zoned to attend Price for 6th grade.
-
How will my child get to Slater, Price or Carver?
All three schools will provide bus transportation. The specific pick up times and bus stops will be posted on the school websites by Friday, July 22. Please note that for Carver High School, PBSA provides transportation for Carver STEAM Academy and APS provides transportation for Carver Early College as the schools are on different bell schedules.
-
How else can I get information about my specific school, bus routes, and other information?
Purpose Built Schools Atlanta will host a community meeting on Wednesday, July 27 from 4-6 p.m. at the Thomasville Heights Recreation Center. The principals of Slater (Jovan Miles), Price (Luqman Abdur Rahman) and Carver STEAM Academy (Andrew Fuller) will all be at the meeting to answer questions directly. Each school will also hold an Open House at the school on Friday, July 29.
-
How do I find out what my student’s school options will be once my family is relocated out of the Forest Cove community?
The organizations supporting you through the relocation process–APD Urban, Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, and COR–will speak with you about school options during your notice of eligibility meetings. Once you have determined where you will move, they will assist you with getting registered at your new school, whether within APS or another school district.
